Abstract

Computer corpus linguistics (CCL) is a scientific innovation that has facilitated the creation and analysis of large corpora in a systematic way by means of computer technology since the 1950s. This article provides an account of the CCL pioneers in general but particularly of those in Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland. It is found that Germany and Sweden, due to more advantageous financing and weaker communities of generativists, had a faster adoption of CCL than the other two countries. A particular late adopter among the four was Switzerland, which did not take up CCL until foreign professors had been recruited.

Abstract

Presents the results of an empirical study performed for a population of Swedish printing firms in order to investigate how firms with different order rates differ in other respects. Provides a number of hypotheses relating to order rates and reports. Suggests that there is a complex interplay among several variables determining the outcome of bidding. Stresses the importance of screening procedures and earlier relations with customers.

Abstract

A basic argument of this study is that organisations are under pressure to increase their revenues because of rising aspirations of those who provide goods and services to the organisation. The study then presents an analytical tool which can be used to identify different strategic alternatives for handling the described situation. These alternatives can be classified into three main categories: customer oriented, technology oriented and provider oriented strategies. The application of the method is illustrated by an application to the situation of the newspaper industry.

Abstract

This paper summarises the results from a study of the organisational aspects of newspaper production, which has been undertaken by using a multi‐method approach. The analysis is based on an organisational model which focuses on newspaper technology, newspaper environment and newspaper personnel. It shows how the characteristics of newspaper technology and newspaper environment put certain restrictions on the work of newspaper employees. These restrictions, in turn, create certain issues, i.e. issues concerning flow, technology, allocation and publication. These four issues as well as the various integrative mechanisms used to handle them are discussed in the paper.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

The circumstances for the emergence of new ideas in organizational theory have previously been explored from several viewpoints. Researchers trace the origins of new ideas to previous literature or compare ideas across continents and countries. The author takes another point of departure. Following Merton (1957, 1963), she focuses on “multiple discoveries” in science, studying the independent, simultaneous (re-)discovery of certain aspects of institutional theory in organizational theory. Specifically, she follows the circumstances under which two pairs of researchers proffered similar explanations for the phenomena they encountered (Jönsson & Lundin, 1977; Meyer & Rowan, 1977). Without ever having met, they suggested an analogous way of understanding the concept of organizing, though their research used different frames of reference and field material and was published in different outlets. The author’s analysis of the circumstances surrounding the two papers led her to explore elements in the emergence of new ideas: the Zeitgeist – the spirit of the times – international networks, and collegial work. When these factors are in play, physical meetings do not seem to be required, but scholars must be involved in networks in which their colleagues provide judgment and advice.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to give advice on how to achieve more productive academic writing work by commenting on 13 rules for good work. This is an increasingly important aspect of academic work for young scholars as publication is the main basis for promotion and salary increases in Europe today.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is to draw on many years of experience as editor of management journals and, when possible, give illustrative comments.

Findings

The claim brought forward by the entire list of academic writing rules is that by living up to them the academic will improve his or her publication record, which will effect life income.

Originality/value

There is an expanding literature on academic writing, mostly in book form. This paper provides the essentials in compressed form.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to outline a conceptual framework for the institutional preconditions for media work and how organizations establish these conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The work concurs with the stream of scholars who use social theory as their starting‐point to understand and make sense of public relations as a societal phenomenon. Based on earlier empirical analysis and theoretical arguments this paper supports the notion of corporate media work as being much more complex and extensive than was earlier recognized. Vital to this is mediatization, a concept describing how media are transformed from being a mediator between institutions to becoming an institution in themselves.

Findings

The paper outlines three different ideal types of strategies of corporate media work: providing, promoting, and co‐opting, resting on different aims and functions.

Originality/value

Organizational media work redefines, reshapes and structures the economic, political and social positions of organizations. Therefore scholars will be helped by a more developed framework to categorize and understand corporate media work in a mediatized society.
